This movie was incredible, between the visuals, the story, the representation, the characters, even the setting itself, this movie was phenomenal. There was a short time near the start of the movie where I was a little confused because it was a kind of flashback, but it was all ironed out within the first 20 minutes or so. I can't stress this enough, I loved the symbolism of the red woven band the entire time. The fact that the band itself is about things being brought together(Musubi, as its refereed to in the film) as well as the fact that the Japanese believe that they are all connected to one another through a metaphorical red string. I loved the whole idea of them being trapped in different timelines to one another and how the idea of time was addressed in the film. I also think that I loved every single character. Tessie and Sayaka were great side characters whenever they were on screen, and I loved how Tessie was just the techie radio friend. The friends in Tokyo were also pretty enjoyable, but they did feel a little bit bland. Now the visuals.. OH MY GOD THE VISUALS. I watched Akira before I watched this.. and I think that this is infinitely more beautiful. The flashback scene near the end of the film nearly brought me to tears just because of how beautifully animated and themed it was.
As someone that has watched a lotttt of animated movies, but very few "Anime" movies, but I am glad that this is one of the first that I have ever seen. Every second of this movie had me gripped and interested... even through some of the more... interesting scenes, like when Taki first woke up in Mitsuha's body and.... was confused.... well say that. Overall, it feels criminal to give this masterpiece anything less than a 9.4/10
